  과천동 향나무 전설

  마을로 들어가는 길 앞에 향나무가 한 그루 있었고, 그 밑에 우물이 있었다. 우물에서 조금 내려가면 서너 마지기 쯤 되는 논이 있었는데, 물이 좋아서 못자리를 내고는 하였다. 논 한 복판에 작은 섬처럼 논 바닥이 솟아 나와 있었는데, 옛날에는 거기서 구렁이가 나와서 돌아다니다가 들어가고는 했다고 한다. 그래서 거기에서 논임자가 고사를 지내야만 했다. 그리고 향나무 아래에도 구렁이가 살았는데, 그 곳에도 고사를 지냈다. 고사를 지내지 않고 못자리를 내면 구렁이가 나와 돌아다녀서 못자리를 못쓰게 만들었기 때문이었다. 고사를 지내면 구렁이가 나와도 못자리에 들어가지 않으니까 지냈던 것이다. 향나무와 우물은 지금도 있다.

  크게 자라면 높이가 25m에 달하며, 줄기는 곧게 서서 많은 가지를 내고, 작은 가지는 원주형으로 녹색을 띤다. 잎의 앞면은 녹색이고 뒷면은 백색으로 여름에서 가을에 걸쳐서 작은 가지 끝에 담이백색(淡荑白色)의 콩꽃과 같은 꽃이 핀다. 콩과식물에 속하며 열매는 콩깍지처럼 2.5~5㎝나 되는 깍지 속에 1~4개의 종자가 생기는데, 종자 사이는 좁게 오므라들어서 염주처럼 달려 있다. 그래서 일본 사람들은 이 나무를 염주나무라고 한다.
  회나무를 한자로 괴목(槐木)이라고 쓰기 때문에 느티나무로 잘못 알기가 쉽다.
